Photo Copyright and Research for Students and Writers

Whether I'm presenting at a writing conference or interacting with kids during an author visit, there's almost always one question that always comes up when I talk about my writing process as a nonfiction author. Adults and children alike want to know about the photographs in my books. Did you choose the photographs? How did you find the pictures? Did you cut and paste after a Google search?

The answers to these photo research questions are actually different for each of my books since I've worked with four different publishers. Actually, that's not true. I never cut and paste images after a Google search. But sometimes I choose photographs in books like in The Laura Ingalls Wilder Companion: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide. But the publisher of Whooo Knew? The Truth About Owls chose the images in that book.
Copyright and Photo Research Lesson

I have created an interactive slideshow mini lesson about photo copyright for curious people (including teachers, students, readers, and writers). It even includes audio clips of me talking about my photo research process as a professional writer. In the mini lesson, I focus on my two newest books which are Whooo Knew? The Truth About Owls (Reycraft Books, 2020) and The Laura Ingalls Wilder Companion: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide (Chicago Review Press, 2020).

This slideshow is a lot like the interactive slideshow I created which shares my research and writing process for Whooo Knew? The Truth About Owls that readers, teachers, and writers are finding so helpful.

I also want to share with you resources that I find helpful as well as some information about photo and image copyright. I shared them in the photo copyright mini lesson, but sometimes it's nice to have them here, too.

I always enjoy helping others. If you found this helpful, consider sharing it with others who would appreciate it, too. Don't forget to check out my writing process mini lesson. If you're a writer, I also have on-demand workshops available since we're not meeting in person these days. Use coupon code AWBLOG2020 to get 10% off any KidLit Creatives course. Or if you think I'd be a good match for your students or staff, I'd love to do an author visit or professional development.

  1. This is great! I'm a photo researcher, working mostly with children's nonfiction. I'm sure I don't only speak for myself when I say we value the work of photographers and other visual creators, we value factual content, AND we think finding photos of cool stuff like owls is always fun!
